Will Your Furniture Fit?

Nothing is worse than buying a new piece of furniture and getting it home only to discover that it won’t fit in your front door, or that you can’t get the couch up the flight of stairs.  Before buying any furniture, make sure you check our guide that will show you how to tell if your new furniture will fit.

Measure Your Space

Measure Your Room - How to tell if your new furniture will fit.jpg
  1. Measure door sizes – The heights and widths of the entryways and the hallways of the inside and outside of your home.

  2. Measure the entryway clearance – Measure the distance from the wall, through the doorway to the opposite wall.

  3. Measure ceiling height – Take into account the height of the ceiling, corners and hanging lights that may get in the way.

  4. Measure Elevators – For those of you in condos in the city, check the size of the elevators or freight elevators.

  1. Furniture Measurements – Get the measurements of your new furniture; this includes the width, depth, and height.

  2. Check for removable components – Some furniture includes removable legs, feet, and bases. Check with someone from our interior design team before you order the product for your project for help.

  3. Watch out for online orders - Sometimes online resellers list the size of the packaging, not the actual size of the piece of furniture. Make sure to reach out to the vendor if you have concerns.

Other Pinch Points

  • Will it fit in Your Car or Van? - We have run into many situations where a customer says they have a “large SUV” only to find out that they can’t fit the new cabinet in their SUV because things are off by 1/2”.

  • Can You Remove Doors? – If you are in a pinch (literally), check to see if the door can be removed from the hinges.

  • Remove Artwork – Make sure to take any artwork or mirrors off of the wall in tight spaces. This will avoid damage to your home and may give you the extra inch you need to get your new sofa in your living room. It’s easier to patch drywall than fix artwork.

  • Plants & Sculptures – Move any plants or sculptures before moving the new furniture. Better to take a few seconds to protect your existing pieces.
