Bucktown timber loft design project

Project Description:

This Chicago bachelor had a pretty bland living room that had under scaled furniture that was worn and outdated.

Inspiration:

The natural materials found in this timber loft inspired us to create a space using many natural materials that would feel right at home with the warehouse loft vibe.

What We Did:

For this living room interior design project, we selected all of the furniture, lighting, designed custom artwork and selected the accessories.

Highlights:

  • Because our client wanted a place to relax after long hours at the office, we started by designing a space that had a large and comfortable sectional sofa.
  • We selected accent tables (e.g. Coffee Table, End Table and Sofa Table) made from wood and metal, materials found throughout the loft
  • Lighting in loft spaces is tricky because of the size of the space, smaller windows and darker materials (e.g. brick walls, dark wood floors and high wood ceiling).  To address this, we developed a lighting plan that featured ceiling lights in key spots along with plenty of floor and table lamps.
  • Climate control is another tricky aspect of loft spaces. In the afternoon, the Western Chicago sun would pour into the living room and quickly heat up the space.  To combat this, we installed room darkening roller shades that can be lowered to no only add privacy to the space, but block out the afternoon sunlight when desired.
  • Along the Eastern wall underneath the windows we added multiple free standing bookshelves.  The open shelves and repetition of the pieces allow for a large amount of storage and offer a space to showcase accessories.
  • Kathryn Cherne from Design Inside created a large custom art installation which adds a splash of color and texture for the dining area.
