With the muted glow of gray glass tile and the sharp contrast of black cabinets against a white countertop, we created a dramatic, Techni-chic cooking center – combining European elegance with American practicality.

When Design Inside was selected to design this engaged couple’s home, we knew that combining her lively, Italian taste with his restful, minimalist aesthetic would inspire spaces with both broad architectural appeal and exquisite details for the eye to explore. To start things off, we knew that we would have to be very clever in planning the kitchen. The clients wanted a European-type kitchen with ‘floating’ cabinets but they also wanted to maintain a large amount of storage, all while adding new appliances such as a cooktop and double-oven. It was a very tall order! But, by combining and comparing ideas, exploring the technical requirements and the aesthetic desires, the team at Design Inside was able to maximize the space and create a cooking area with sophistication. The crisp contrast between the carbon Rohe style doors from Mid-Continent Cabinetry and the light Blanco Maple Silestone countertop provided high drama and a stain resistent, anti-microbial preparation surface. The ‘pencil’ gray glass tiles from Maestro Mosaics created a sort of digital, technical rhythm that was softened with the translucent glass doors of the horizontal cabinets and the Bruck lighting Laguna Down fixtures. To further temper the techni-chic quality, a custom-designed oak and ebonized cherry peninsula from Halldoor Woodworking was built to coordinate with the antique, claw-foot table passed down through his family. Further unifying the space, the Lutron switches and outlets have silver covers and black ‘gear’ that echo the cabinets; the striking dark blue wall recalls the soft blue-gray grout between the beautiful tiles.
